Building a Legacy: Hellenic Community and Afkos Family Transform Education

The Hellenic Community of Western Australia proudly celebrated a landmark achievement today with the official opening of the $9 million Bianca Afkos Science & Technology Centre at St Andrew’s Grammar. This state-of-the-art facility will inspire innovation and excellence across science, technology, and the arts for generations to come.

From Term 1 next year, students will have access to advanced science laboratories, cutting-edge robotics, and purpose-built performance spaces, ensuring they are future-ready.

The Centre was officially unveiled by Hon. Sue Lines (Senator for WA), and Paul Afkos OAM (President of the Hellenic Community of WA). Distinguished guests included the Afkos family, Consul Ms Eleni Georgopoulou, Hon. Dean Smith (Senator), Hon. Basil Zempilas MLA, Frank Paolino (MLA), Mayor Mark Irwin, St. Andrew’s Advisory Board Chair Eleni Evangel, CEO Paul Savvas, and Father Terry Gerovasilis, who blessed the building.

In his address, Paul Afkos OAM spoke with deep emotion about naming the Centre in memory of his late wife, Bianca Afkos. The Afkos family’s generosity, including a half-million donation, was instrumental in bringing this vision to life.

“The Bianca Afkos Science and Technology Centre is more than a building” says CEO Paul Savvas, “it’s a legacy of learning, innovation, and community spirit in memory of Mrs Afkos.”
