Hellenic Community Aged Care Launches Gardening Club for Residents

Whether it’s nurturing a seedling, tending to a flourishing garden bed, or simply spending time outdoors, gardening has a wonderful way of bringing people together. That spirit was on full display at the inaugural session of our new Gardening Club.

The club was recently launched by our onsite gardener, Sharon, who wanted to create an opportunity for residents to enjoy the many benefits of horticulture while connecting with one another through a shared passion. Together with fellow onsite gardener Petros, Sharon has already helped transform our gardens and outdoor spaces through beautiful landscaping, vibrant floral displays, and their ongoing dedication to creating welcoming environments for residents to enjoy.

At the first Gardening Club session, residents rolled up their sleeves and got hands-on planting their very own herb seedlings. From carefully preparing the soil and selecting the perfect pots to gently watering their new plants, the activity was met with enthusiasm and plenty of smiles.

As the session unfolded, it quickly became clear that the club would offer much more than gardening alone. Residents eagerly exchanged tips and advice, discussing everything from the ideal pot sizes for coriander and parsley to the best fertilisers for encouraging healthy growth. We were particularly fortunate to have residents with extensive gardening experience share their knowledge. Among those was a former local market gardener and another resident with a farming background whose insights sparked engaging conversations and added a wealth of practical expertise to the group.

Beyond the gardening discussions, the club also became a space for storytelling and connection. Residents reminisced about gardens they had tended over the years, favourite plants they had grown, and treasured memories linked to family homes and outdoor spaces. These conversations highlighted the powerful role gardening can play in fostering wellbeing, creativity, and social connection.

We are delighted with the success of our first Gardening Club gathering and look forward to watching both the club and our residents’ herb gardens continue to flourish in the months ahead.

Thank you to Sharon and Petros for bringing this wonderful initiative to life and helping our community grow, one seedling at a time.
