Paul Afkos OAM Awarded Life Membership of Football West

Paul Afkos OAM, President of the Hellenic Community of Western Australia, has been awarded Life Membership of Football West following a resolution passed at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting on 20 May 2026.
Life Membership represents one of Football West’s highest honours and is conferred on individuals whose service to the game has been significant, sustained, and impactful across multiple areas of football in Western Australia. The award recognises contributions that extend beyond a single club and reflect long-term commitment to the development and administration of the sport.
Whilst Mr Afkos is very humble in receiving such a prestigious award, he acknowledges the great honour in being recognised for the award and pays tribute to his whole family who have supported him while he devoted many years to their shared love of football.
Mr Afkos has played an important role in the evolution of football in the state, notably as co-owner of Perth Glory Football Club at the time of its establishment in 1995. The formation of Perth Glory marked a major milestone for Western Australian football, providing a professional platform for local players and significantly raising the sport’s profile. The club went on to achieve considerable success in the National Soccer League, including three Premierships and two Championships in the early 2000s.

In formally advising of the appointment, Football West Chairman Sherif Andrawes acknowledged Mr Afkos’ “outstanding contribution to the game” and thanked him for his “exceptional service to football in Western Australia.”
Mr Afkos who commenced his contribution to WA Football in 1972, continues to support the progress of football in Australia. He is a former Board Member of the Australian National Soccer league (NSL), President and Life Member of Kingsway Olympic soccer club Inc, Board Member of the State Soccer Federation of WA Inc and Board Member of the Junior Soccer Association of WA Inc.
As a Life Member, Mr Afkos will receive invitations to Football West Annual General Meetings and events. His appointment recognises the longstanding contribution to football in Western Australia by Mr Afkos and formally acknowledges his role in the development of the game at both club and broader community levels.
